Valerie Ervin Endorses David Blair for County Executive

Rockville, Md., May 2, 2022 -- Former Montgomery County Councilmember and 2018 Maryland gubernatorial candidate Valerie Ervin has endorsed Democrat David Blair for Montgomery County Executive.

“I know that David Blair not only is the nicest human being you’ll ever meet, but he is someone who understands how to build a team, bring people together, build consensus, and get things done,” Ervin said. “Because without a David Blair as County Executive, we continue to lose ground not only in Montgomery County but in the entire region. We have seen ourselves going backward in terms of jobs, economic development, even schools. It is time for a new leader and David is that person, a true leader who will take us to the next level.”

Ervin, the first African-American woman to serve on the County Council, represented Silver Spring-based District 5 for two terms from 2006 to 2014. She continued to serve, first as the Executive Director of the nonprofit Center for Working Families and now as a Special Assistant in the Office of the Chief of Staff for Prince George’s County Public Schools.

A highly respected community and education advocate even before serving on the Council, Ervin became a leader for social justice, equity in education, addressing food insecurity, growing good-paying jobs, and improving transit service to underserved neighborhoods.

As Council President in 2011 during the height of the Great Recession, Ervin helped guide the County through one of the most difficult financial situations it ever faced while preserving the County’s coveted AAA bond rating. Before serving on the Council, Ervin was elected to the County’s Board of Education.

“I’m honored that Valerie has endorsed our campaign. Valerie has made a tremendous positive impact for our County in so many important areas, including for our schools, racial equity, supporting working families, smart growth, and County Government operations,” Blair said. “She is an extraordinary leader and I’m grateful for her insight and support.”

Ervin joins a fast-growing number of leading organizations and local leaders who have pledged their support for Blair in the July 19 Democratic Primary for County Executive. Endorsers of Blair include Sierra Club, Maryland Senate Majority Leader Nancy King (District 39), State Senator and Vice Chair of the Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee Cheryl Kagan (District 17), City of Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, former Congressional Reps. John Delaney and Michael Barnes, and former City of Rockville Mayor and 2018 County Executive candidate Rose Krasnow.

The Democratic Primary for County Executive will be July 19, 2022. Early Voting will run from July 7 through July 14, 2022.
