Rockville, Md., April 26, 2022 -- Sierra Club, one of the largest and most revered environmental organizations in the United States, has endorsed Democrat David Blair to be Montgomery County’s next County Executive.
“David Blair understands the urgency of addressing climate change and is running a campaign dedicated to action,” said David Sears, longtime Political Chair of the Sierra Club’s Montgomery County Group. “He has a bold, achievable vision for Montgomery County where we grow public transit, support walkable and bikeable communities, emphasize smart growth and jobs in Montgomery County, and do our part to contribute to Maryland’s transformation to relying on clean energy located in-state.”
Blair’s Environmental Progress plan details his vision to triple solar energy production in Montgomery County, plant 10,000 trees a year with a focus on areas where tree canopy has been degraded over time, implement countywide curbside composting pick-up to reduce waste and close the County’s incinerator, pursue net zero energy County buildings, and modernize stormwater management techniques to prevent runoff and pollution from damaging local streams.
Sierra Club has 6,000 members in Montgomery County and is a leading advocate for effective and forward-thinking climate, energy, and sustainability policy. In a County highly concerned about reducing carbon emissions and environmental protection, the Sierra Club endorsement is seen as one of the major endorsements in Montgomery County elections.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the Sierra Club for its support and know that together we can move Montgomery County forward with the urgency the climate crisis requires,” Blair said. “Sierra Club recognizes the critical importance to achieving our environmental goals of building tens of thousands of units of mixed-income, mixed-use, and affordable housing in areas near Metro and Purple Line stations - and retrofitting roads for safe walking, biking, and dedicated bus service.”
Throughout his campaign, Blair will detail more about his vision for reducing transportation-related carbon emissions, building walkable and bikeable communities, and expanding transit and affordable housing near transit to meet the County’s environmental goals.
Sierra Club joins a number of local leaders who have pledged their support for Blair in the Democratic Primary for County Executive, including Maryland Senate Majority Leader Nancy King (District 39), State Senator and Vice Chair of the Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee Cheryl Kagan (District 17), City of Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, former Congressional Reps. John Delaney and Michael Barnes, and former City of Rockville Mayor and 2018 County Executive candidate Rose Krasnow.
The Democratic Primary for County Executive will be July 19, 2022. Early Voting will run from July 7 through July 14, 2022.
